Road salt keeps us safe on icy roads, but it's relentless on vehicles. Left alone it accelerates corrosion, dulls paint, and eats into exposed metal. A little routine through the winter goes a long way.

What salt actually does

Salt is hygroscopic — it holds moisture against metal and speeds up rust. It works into seams, the undercarriage, and brake components, where it's easy to miss and slow to dry.

Winter habits that help

• Wash every 1–2 weeks, including the undercarriage, even when it's cold.
• Don't skip washes just because it'll get dirty again — it's about removing salt, not staying shiny.
• Keep paint protected with a coating or sealant before the season starts.
• Dry door jambs and seals to stop water from freezing and stressing trim.

Get ahead of it

The best winter defence is set up in the fall: a thorough decontamination and a fresh ceramic coating or sealant so salt and grime have far less to cling to. Already mid-winter? A maintenance detail will still strip built-up salt before it does real harm.
